A weekend in the mountains

We took a rare weekend off a few weeks ago and ventured into the mountains in the George Washington National Forest along the Virginia/ West Virginia border. The weather called for rain all weekend, and we almost canceled at the last minute. Even with a little light rain though, three days camping and hiking in the woods were just what we all needed.

Rainy weather flora and fauna: Indian Pipes, tiny fairy mushrooms, a parasitic non-photosythensizing plant known as squaw root or bear corn among other names, and one of the many, many snails we saw over our stay.

Lovely mossy stream.

Wild rhodendrons just coming into bloom, a view of the Appalachian Trail in the distance, a luna moth we startled off a lichen-covered tree, and dense morning mist in the mountains.

The view from the tiny road that led to our campground.
