Two sets of exterior hand rails

Last fall we created two sets of matching hand rails in a simple curved design and installed just in time for the winter holidays.

We used a traditional half-oval cap rail for this piece, so named for the shape of the material in profile. In the first photo Kyle is creating the terminal curve at bottom of the steps. In the second photo, he's checking the angle of the curve as it spirals downward. The last photo shows the heat scale or oxidized steel that forms on the surface of the steel as it's heated and forged. This scale is cleaned off before a finish is applied to the steel.

And here are the two sets of completed railing installed! A nice simple but elegant design.
