Mosaic artist and educator Laurel True is a powerhouse of seemingly endless energy. She is founder of both the Institute of Mosaic Art in Oakland, CA, the largest mosaic education center in the US, as well as the Global Mosaic Project, an international community-based group that creates public art and provides entrepreneurial training and art education. As if that weren't enough, True offers a wide variety of mosaic classes around the country, creates private commission works, and explores ideas about identity and place through her studio mosaic work. We first came across True's work at "Inspired By: Contemporary Mosaics and the Historical Tradition," an exhibition at the University of Mary Washington in 2008. Then and now, we're impressed by her meticulous use of unique, reclaimed materials and inspired by her energy and community spirit.
