Coordinating Set of Home Accessories

Early last winter as we were in the flurry of preparing for Craft + Design, one of our favorite local craft shows, a newlywed couple asked if we could make a coordinating set of items for their new home. They’d seen these items in our Etsy shop and on our social media, and it had set their wheels spinning imagining an address plaque, hall bench, and coat rack for the entrance of their house. What a dream it was for us to combine all our skills to create this special grouping!

Here you can see each of the pieces in progress in our studios. The bench and coat rack hooks are forged steel, with the seat and coat rack frame made from cherry wood. The mosaics are made from a variety of glass and ceramic.

Like many of our most successful projects, this couple gave us a few particulars to work with, and left the rest of the design up to us. They told us their colors, shared photos of the entrance to their home, and mentioned some of our work to which they were especially drawn. That balance of specifics and openness allows us as artisans the structure and freedom we need to create new and fresh custom work in our signature style.

Below are photos and details of each of the finished pieces in our studios. Johannah loves to photograph all our work in the metal studio. The west-facing side of the shop space is covered entirely in large, industrial-era windows allowing for the most beautiful filtered natural lighting.

Our latest custom coat racks

Time for another round-up of our most recent custom coat racks! You can see more examples in our past blog posts and in our portfolio.

The fun part about the coat racks included here is that each was inspired by the details, colors, or style of an existing coat rack. That makes each piece a truly satisfying collaboration between our style and the client's preferences.

Six Hook Custom Coat Racks

We've made quite a few six hook mosaic coat racks this year, each with its own special twist. We thought we'd share a few photos to show you the steps to creating a custom piece like this.

This first group of photos shows the process of creating the mosaic itself.

In the first three photos, you can see:

  • creating a color gradient based on photos submitted by the client.
  • an example of the reclaimed material we use for all our mosaic supports. This particular board's former life was a template for a railing.
  • a blue mosaic celebrating the couple's anniversary with mementos from their relationship.

Next three photos show:

  • a mosaic with found objects.
  • Johannah's mid-process studio mess.
  • a mosaic featuring coins left over from the customer's travels.

This group shows what happens once the mosaic is complete. First the mosaic is glued into the reclaimed wood frame made by Kyle. Next the mosaic is grouted, a process that often requires plenty of blue tape to protect the frame and some found objects and mementos. Last the hooks are installed. We love seeing the texture and shine of mosaics in raking light. The way mosaics change in the light is a big part of their magic.

And the completed coat racks! Whether you are celebrating a special memory or looking for a unique way to hang your jackets in style all while complementing the room, our mosaic coat racks are the perfect thing. We offer them in three sizes: two hooks, four hooks, and six hooks. We love working with our clients to create a one-of-a-kind piece of functional artwork just for them.
