Making Mosaic Mirrors

Here's a peek into Johannah’s design process as it evolves through four different large mosaic mirrors.

After making several mirrors in light, pretty colors with curving lines, I wanted to create a mirror that felt more masculine. The colors in this mirror are heavier and more earthy, and the grout line is straight. The first photo shows the palette and color progression for this piece, and the second photo shows the mirror in process.

The colors and the serpentine line in this mirror are similar to earlier mirrors, but I added an inner border in flat gray unglazed porcelain.

For this mirror, I used the porcelain border in place of the sinuous grout line in the last mirror. This piece makes me think of an underwater ocean scene, with the the meandering line of ceramic against the deep blues and greens. The first photo shows the finished mirror ready for grout. The second photo shows a photo shoot in process with the mirror on our fancy rolling photo wall!

For this last mirror in the series, I wanted to work with blue and black again as I did in the first piece. I used unglazed porcelain in blue rather than the neutral grays and browns in my earlier mirrors. I created a wider and more dynamic serpentine grout line. Against the dusky blues, this grout line reminds me of a line of smoke rising from a candle or a stick of incense. The first photo shows my sketch for the grout line, and the second photo shows the piece in progress. Those cookie trays are so helpful for sorting colors.

Fall projects

This fall has flown by in a whirl! In addition to our work making and selling metal and mosaic goods, we've been working on bringing RVA Makers, a grassroots networking group we founded three years ago, to the next level. Over the summer we created a board and now we're raising funds to cover the costs of becoming an official non-profit. Whew! Take a peek at the campaign over on Indiegogo.

Meanwhile, here's what we've been up to in the metal, mosaic, and wood department!

This is the third annual trophy we've created for the ie* Innovation Award. We like to change it up a little each year and try something new.

Custom six-hook mosaic coat rack in blue and green. Unfortunately we didn't remember to get a photo of this one during daylight hours, so the colors are a little off in this picture.

Here's some of our work in the Umanoff Design booth at a super fun high end home décor shop. The mixture of furniture and art at this place is so fun to explore!

Candle cups and the small gradient mosaics are a few of our treasures we dropped off at Art 180 for their second annual Atlas Holiday Market, opening Friday December 4.

A few recent projects

Fall is always a busy time for craft shows and the retail side of our business, but we've managed to squeeze in a few commissions and and small projects these last few months as well. Here are four of our favorite recent projects:

Bronze door knocker. The photo on the left shows Kyle using a chisel to chase the numbers into the bronze plate.

A sweet little custom mirror in blue and gray.

Blue Ridge Mountains mosaic commission. The photo on the left shows the grouting process. Johannah used three colors of grout to enhance the tones of the glass.

Forged vessels created on the fly press.
