Interior Stair Leaf Railing

This client reached out to Kyle about forging a custom interior stair railing with an organic leaf motif. Come on in the studio and see a little bit of the process behind this piece!

The first step in creating this railing was to forge the leaves. In the photo on the left, Kyle is using a chisel and filleting block to shape the center vein of a leaf. The middle photo shows the entire process from bar stock to finished leaf. And the last photo shows the leaves after they've been given a bit of personality.

Next Kyle created the frame for the railing, forged the branches and set them in place, and finally added the leaves.

And here it is installed! From this photo, you can see there is a slight turn to the steps, an important detail to keep in mind when measuring and laying out the design. For an interior railing, our favorite finish is a clear wax that shows off the natural beauty of forged steel.

Simple Porch Stair Hand Railing

So just how does a hand-forged railing go from a homeowner's need to a beautiful custom installation? Here's part 2 of our story about creating and installing porch stair hand railings with the answer. (You can find part 1 here.)

This repeat client asked Kyle to design something in his own personal style specific to her home. He created a simple, open design using nouveau lines.

Clockwise from top left: with a little creativity, we can heat fairly large forms in our small gas forge. Kyle bends the hot steel using a tool called a bending U in the post vise. Next the cap rail is attached to the posts with traditional rivets. Now the railing is ready for paint!

And there it is! Custom hand forged porch stair railing, painted gloss black and installed in brick steps.

Once the client has approved a design for a custom railing and we begin production, the first step is a full-scale drawing on our steel layout tables. This exterior stair railing design included scrolls big enough to require a little creativity to fit them in our small gas forge!

There you have it! The finished product, a custom hand-forged stair rail, painted and installed in the brick steps and slate patio.
