Modern Staircase

We built and installed this custom modern staircase and hand railing in a beautiful new modern home here in Richmond, Virginia.

Next step is installation. First the stair stringers, then the steps, followed by the railing, and finally the glass panels.

Two sets of exterior hand railings

We created and installed two sets of matching custom hand railings for this home in a simple curved design.

We used a traditional half-oval cap rail for this piece, so named for the shape of the material in profile. In the first photo Kyle is creating the terminal curve at bottom of the steps. In the second photo, he's checking the angle of the curve as it spirals downward. The last photo shows the heat scale or oxidized steel that forms on the surface of the steel as it's heated and forged. This scale is cleaned off before a finish is applied to the steel.

And here are the two sets of completed railing installed! A nice simple but elegant design.

Summer of Railings

Do two sets of railings make for a summer of railings? Does making them at the peak of the summer heat in a sweltering studio with just a few fans blowing on the blacksmiths make it count? Yeah, we thought so too.

We're really enjoying these minimal, open designs. This first small custom hand railing was installed in a porch with slate steps.

This second railing design required a pair to complete the sweet little brick path from the street up to the house. Notice the detail at the end of the handrails. This was a particularly fun design!
