Butler's Pantry

We created this all-steel custom butler's pantry for a chef here in Richmond. This was a fun change of pace for us! She wanted a distressed look to this piece, so the welds and darkened mill scale on the steel are rougher than our usual treatment. Check out a few shots of the process and installation below.

The bottom doors are fronted with steel mesh, while the top doors have glass installed in them. We thought this handsome and industrial piece looked just right once installed in its downtown loft home.

Gifts and other items

We're always honored when asked to create custom gifts, whether for an anniversary, birthday, holiday, or any other reason. Here's a selection of gifts and related items we made last fall.

A set of custom shelves for showing off a gorgeous pyrex collection! Kyle created forged steel shelf brackets and reclaimed heart pine shelves to house these classic dishes.

This is the fourth trophy we've created for the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce annual Impact Awards. You can see versions from previous years here and here. This project just gets more fun every year!

These last two projects prove the furniture designer & blacksmith's family DO have furniture and handforged items! Kyle made the loft bed for our daughter, who helped design it. The photo on the left shows the bed in process, and the photo on the right is the finished bed waiting to surprise her!

The fire poker, below, was a gift for Johannah who's been known to complain that "we really need a poker for this fireplace!" There's no more complaining now that this beauty is hanging at our house.

You can see gift items in our shop available year round!

Made in RVA Take 2

Next week, we’re excited to take part in Made in RVA Take 2. This is the second annual show of local handcrafted furniture & furnishings hosted by Richmond's awesome independent furniture store, LaDiff.

We created three new pieces of furniture as well as a line of mosaics just for this show. Take a peek at a few process photos below.

Kyle created the shelves and body of this media console in cherry. The legs are forged steel with hammer texturing along the length and fold-formed feet. The edges of the shelves are clad in riveted steel.

Johannah is exploring a new-to-her technique of setting tesserae (mosaic tile) directly in mortar, rather than gluing tiles and then grouting over them. This is the method used to create the ancient Byzantine and Roman mosaics, as well as an ever-growing body of gorgeous modern mosaics. She's created a line of miniature and small pieces in this technique using reclaimed and found materials alongside traditional smalti, a thick opaque glass.

Last but definitely not least, Kyle made a pair of sleek-lined end tables with walnut tops and forged solid steel legs.

Come on by the opening reception or stop by in the next few weeks to check out these pieces along with the work of 12 other local artists and artisans, beautifully displayed in the LaDiff show room in Shockoe Bottom. Hope to see you there!
