Exterior Stair Railing

Here's a simple, elegant custom exterior stair railing we recently created.

The first step was to create the helix-shaped lateral returns. This is the part of the railing that transitions from the hand railing into the supporting newel post. You can see Kyle giving a final tweak to the helix below.

Once the pickets are created, they're welded into the frame. Because this design does not have a subrail and the pickets terminate directly into the steps, we tack welded bars to the bottom to hold the rail together until we installed it.

Here we're forging bronze finials for the newel post. Below you can see finished photos of the railing installed in the marble steps, as well as a detail shot of the bronze finial and the helix lateral return.
