Benches in Forged Steel and Glass Mosaic

In addition to the forged steel and mosaic collaborative tabletop and wall sculptures we make together, we also love collaborating to create furniture and other functional pieces.

This first bench features a forged steel base, a stretcher with brightly colored mosaic inlay, and an ash seat.

Johannah also designed a mosaic mirror in similar colors to coordinate with this bench. We think they’d look great paired together in an entryway or bedroom, or any nook that could use a seat and a splash of color.

(And psst, these two pieces are available. Reach out for more information!)

The next two benches were created for a client who needed one bench to use at their dining table, and another to go outside.

For a commission like this, Kyle will often create a quick sheet of thumbnail ideas. Once the client narrows their preference down to two to four favorites, he’ll make more detailed drawings.

When it came time for Johannah to make the mosaics, we had to get creative in finding ways to support the benches so the steel pans Kyle creates for the mosaics would lay relatively flat.

Sun and Moon Bench

The Sun and Moon Bench was designed to be installed and used outside, with a weather-resistant base of forged stainless steel and a cypress wood seat.

Dining Table Collaboration

We’ve said it before, combining our skills to create original collaborations is one of our favorite parts of the work we do. This custom dining table with benches was a special project we designed and built.

The bases are, of course, forged steel. The tops are walnut, made by our friend, local woodworker Lee DiJospeh. A line of mosaic inlay in blue, green, and gold extends in a continuous curved arc across the tops of both benches and the table itself.

Kyle first created a maquette, or preliminary model, of the table leg to see how his ideas worked in the real world. He and his team then built the bases to all three pieces. The table base is designed with folded steel legs. A trestle of two mirrored arcs is tenoned into the legs. The bench bases are a simpler curved steel shape that compliments the curves in the table base.

Once Lee finished making the walnut top, he carved a line across the tops of all three pieces for the mosaic inlay. Johannah then created a line of mosaic that flows from dark to light blue, light green to dark, and back again, continuously across all three tops. The inlay waterfalls over the edges for a satisfyingly finished feel.

Coordinating Set of Home Accessories

This client reached out to us about making a set of custom coordinating items for their new home. They’d seen our work in our Etsy shop and on our social media, and it had set their wheels spinning imagining an address plaque, hall bench, and coat rack for the entrance of their house. What a dream it was for us to combine all our skills to create this special grouping!

Here you can see each of the pieces in progress in our studios. The bench and coat rack hooks are forged steel, with the seat and coat rack frame made from cherry wood. The mosaics are made from a variety of glass and ceramic.

Like many of our most successful projects, this couple gave us a few particulars to work with, and left the rest of the design up to us. They told us their colors, shared photos of the entrance to their home, and mentioned some of our work to which they were especially drawn. That balance of specifics and openness allows us as artisans the structure and freedom we need to create new and fresh custom work in our signature style.

Below are photos and details of each of the finished pieces in our studios. Johannah loves to photograph all our work in the metal studio. The west-facing side of the shop space is covered entirely in large, industrial-era windows allowing for the most beautiful filtered natural lighting.
