Greek Key Firepace Screens and Tools

One of the fun things about running a business in the age of the internet is that folks find us from all over. Kyle created this set of fireplace screens and tools for a couple that reached out to us from the other side of the country in Washington state.

This couple was in the process of building a new home with both an indoor and an outdoor fireplace. They wanted a coordinating fire screen and set of fire tools with a Greek key design for each.

Here you can see the detailed process required to fabricate each Greek key. Between the two fire screens and eight tools, Kyle created 20 of these altogether!

Here’s a quick video tour showing some of the fire screen details & the closing mechanism.

The two fireplace screens in Kyle’s workshop before he applied the finish to them. The interior screen has a wax finish to show off the look and color of the forged steel. The screen for the exterior fireplace gets a high heat enamel finish to protect the steel from the elements.

Here are the finished fireplace screens hanging out in our gallery before we shipped them off to Washington. Below are the two sets of fireplace tools. We make tools for exterior fireplaces a bit longer as they’re usually larger and therefore hotter than an indoor fireplace.

You can see more fireplace screens and tools Kyle has created in a variety of styles in the Fireplace Accessories section of our portfolio.

Fireplace Surround and Mantle

We’ve shared some of our fireplace tools here as well as a variety of custom fire place screens we’ve created over the years. For this next project, we got to go a bit bigger in the world of fireplace accessories.

Kyle and his crew created this custom fireplace surround and mantle in forged and fabricated steel with a rust patina finish. While rust is usually the enemy of steel, when applied and sealed correctly, a rust finish offers a beautiful warmth and richness. The mantle brackets support an oak mantle that coordinates with the other wood in the client’s home.

(By the way, if you like the mantle brackets, you can find a similar set in our Lucia Metal Studios Etsy shop.)

Fireplace Accessories

Fireplace accessories are such a natural fit for blacksmithing. After all, the tools are really just nicer, more finished versions of the tools we use every day. And we’re intimately familiar with creating safe environments around fire. Here are a few recent examples of custom pieces we’ve made.

First up are two modern built-in fire screens. This style is custom fit to the interior of the fire place, as opposed to a stand-alone fire screen that is set in front of the fireplace. These two are quite similar to each other, and we love how well they fit with the different styles of the two clients.

Next up is a set of fireplace tools and stand inspired by the client’s 18th century dragon fire screen. Our friend, jewelry artist Robin Grabinska, carved the prototypes for the tool handles and stand feet. We forged the tools and stand, and shipped the set off to the client’s home in Belgium. A fun one for sure!
