Miniature Mosaic Landscapes

This series of landscape mosaics grew out of Johannah’s initial exploration of tiny mosaics and of course, her continued interest in the full moon.

The first set featured the full moon as well as a few sunrises over a series of her favorite landscapes like forests, mountains, and open water. She created these mosaics from stained glass set in black-tinted mortar.

For the next group she created, Johannah added unglazed porcelain to the stained glass. The flat, saturated color of the ceramic contrasts in such a lovely way with the opaque shine of the glass. She expanded the types of landscapes as well, looking to open fields, rolling hills, train tracks, and waterfalls.

This latest group hearkens back to the forests and sunrises of the original set, while offering a new take on mountain views.

Celestial Series

The moon has had an artistic pull on Johannah for a while now. Over the years she has created a variety of work featuring the full moon. The moon is the main character in some pieces or plays a supporting role in others. There’s even a series of tiny landscapes with full moons lighting the sky.

More recently, the work expanded to include other varieties of celestial bodies: the dark new moon, a radiant sun, and the lunar phases.

The largest interpretation of the moon in the more recent Celestial series features a large full moon rising over a slate blue sky. Stars sparkle softly in the distance. You can see a short video of the mosaic under construction below.

Moonlight Mosaics

Unlike much of the work Johannah has been doing lately, including the two series we posted about last fall, this series doesn't have any deep philosophical or political meaning. Instead, these pieces were inspired by the blue porcelain tile featured in all three, especially the darkest blue. Isn't that a gorgeous color? Especially paired with shades of white stained glass and black mortar.

These mosaics celebrate a deep love of the moon and the night sky. "Night Waves," the first piece in the series, was inspired by the glow of a full moon over an open body of water. "Moon Glow" depicts that haze of glow around the moon, perhaps on clouds, perhaps on a clear night. The most recent piece, "Night Clouds," was inspired by the rushing movement of clouds on a windy night, and the way a star sparkles between them for a moment.
